The biggest names in comics crime fiction assemble for an anthology of original tales of murder and deceit, presented in glorious black-and-white! Comics luminaries Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets), Ed Brubaker (Criminal, Sleeper), David Lapham (Stray Bullets), Rick Geary (A Treasury of Victorian Murder), Chris Offutt (HBO's True Blood), and Paul Grist (Kane) show why they're masters of the genre, while newer talents like Jeff Lemire (Essex County), M. My Thoughts

Rating: ★★★★½

Thoughts: I found this book while skimming through Brian Azzarello’s bibliography on Wikipedia. A book called “Noir” with not only Azzarello’s name attached to it, but also Jeff Lemire, and Ed Brubaker!? Sold!

As a whole, I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of noir.

Visual Highlights

Open the Goddamn Box

Writer and artist: David Lapham / Letterer: Clem Robins
This story made me a little uncomfortable in some places, but I suppose that means the writer was doing a good job of conveying the feelings he wanted to convey within the story.

The Old Silo

Writer and artist: Jeff Lemire
I can't quite put my finger on it, but there was something about this story that I just really liked.

Mister X

Writer and artist: Dean Motter
I enjoyed this story quite a bit. I liked the old school feel of the story a lot.

The Last Hit

Writer: Chris Offutt / Penciller: Kano / Inker: Stefano Gaudiano / Letterer: Clem Robins
A great story. Hit man against hit man.

Fracture

Writer: Alex De Campi / Artist: Hugo Petrus
This story was one of my least favorites in the book. There was very little actual written story telling and more visual story telling. The images were small in a few places and it was like reading a story about the racing thoughts of a person with ADD. Meh.

The Albanian

Writer and artist: M. K. Perker
I wasn't sure whether or not I should laugh or be sick at the killer in this story. Regardless, I loved it!

Kane: The Card Player

Writer and artist: Paul Grist
This story was alright. It was a little predictable and there was something about the art that turned me off.

Blood on my Hands

Writer and artist: Rick Geary
This starts out as your typical man-catches-wife-having-an-affair-and-has-her-killed story, but there is a twist at the end that makes it very cool.

Tru$tworthy

Writer: Ken Lizzi / Artist: Joëlle Jones
This was the only story in the book that was not in 'comic' format but instead in was a prose story with illustrastions. That did not make this story any less enjoyable.

The New Me

Writer: Gary D. Phillips / Artist: Eduardo Barreto / Letterer: Tom Orzechowski
This story mixed sex, mystery, and the gym. At first the story makes one think that the sleazy trainer will just end up banging the girl at the end, which he almost does, but it is worth the read to find out what happens.

Lady's Choice

Writers and artists: The Fillbach Brothers

21st Century Noir

Writer: Ed Brubaker / Artist: Sean Phillips
I am a sucker for anything done Brubaker and Phillips as a team. I am also a sucker for the Criminal series, which is where this story is from. This addition to the Criminal collection, although short, was by far one of my favorite of the entire series. The story is told from the point of view of three different people, with each of their views being a different 'chapter' of the story.

The Bad Night

Writer: Brian Azzarello / Artists: Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon
This was, hands down, my favorite story within the book. Batman and Brian Azzarello, need I say more?
